More novel genes survive than has been the case in the past.

Is this because of lower infant mortality rates or some other reason?

A definition question, loosely speaking. If there is a some new gene that results in .... orange eyes, is this an evolution of the species, or an anomoly in the species?

There is no way to know which genes will be targeted to the actual selection that comes along. If all the energies of the researchers go into genes for straight teeth and thin noses instead of resistance to skin cancer, for example, the entire effort may turn out to be a short term anomoly.

That's true. But I'm willing to bet that they'll go after the gene that affects breast cancer rates before they go after the gene for thin noses.
