We didn't start WW2. So, profits was not the primary motivation for our involvement. But, our involvement in it is a whole other ball of wax. Did FDR know that the attack on Pearl Harbor was coming and did nothing to prevent it because he needed the American people to rally around the war cause? Did FDR want us to get involved in WW2 to help rev up the ailing depression era economy? Couldn't the western powers that be have killed Hilter and prevented WW2 if they really desired to do so? These are questions to ponder, but are water under the bridge now. Certainly, the rebuiling of the Japanese and German economies was important to preserving some stability in the world and buffering ourselves from the Soviet bloc.

I do think Viet Nam was perpetuated by the defense industry to bolster their profits. Perhaps JFK was even blown away by the military-industrial complex because he saw the light and was ready to pull us out of Viet Nam before it got out of hand. I wouldn't at all surprised if that was the case. Viet Nam was the stupidest war that our country ever fought and went on way too long. The only people who won in Viet Nam were the defense contractors.

In any case, Gulf War I was preventable. All we needed to do was put troops on the border with Kuwait to let Saddam know we wouldn't tollerate an invasion.

Gulf War II that we are looking at now is being carried out for dubious reasons. Who really knows if Saddam is really the threat that Bush is making him out to be? Wasn't he a threat 2 years ago or 5 years ago or when he was our ally in the 1980s? Why didn't we take him out then? In any case, $200 Billion is a whole lot of dough to spend on getting rid of one tyrant in the world, especially since we've installed and supported worse tyrants than Saddam. Think of all the houses that could be refurbished or kids that could go to college for $200 Billion?

I'm afraid there is an ulterior motive for Gulf War II and it's spelled O-I-L!
