Actually he should have said, "Well kids, as you know, I'm the prez. Sometimes the prez has to actually do some presidential kinda work. I just got word of some stuff I really gotta get busy on so I gotta go."
He should have said that realizing there were thousands of people more than just a little frightened at the time.
