I used to play competitively in high school. So I rely mostly on my memory of how certain Openings are played.

That and the knowledge that a key to the game is control of the center helps a lot.

This helped a great deal in college, as I had virtually no money to spend at the local bar. The bar had a lot of players that would play for drinks, however. It was a good thing that I didn't own a car in those days; walking home was difficult enough.
