Goldman Sachs profit up on trading gains

NEW YORK, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS - News), a top Wall Street firm, on Tuesday posted an increase in quarterly profit as fixed income and currency trading offset declines in investment banking.



The New York firm reported net income of $522 million, or $1.00 a share, for its fiscal third quarter ended Aug. 30. That compared with earnings of $468 million, or 87 cents a share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average had expected Goldman to earn 99 cents a share, with estimates ranging from 90 cents and $1.09, according to market research firm Thomson First Call.
