Robert, I don't think the antenna as currently designed would be able to disconnect and connect to the house or car. This sounds complex to me, such as having to switch between AC and 12-volt power, the weight, the fact you might drop it, etc. But, I think the RECEIVER might be able to move. KVH seems to be on top of the issues, and I'm sure they are aware of cost issues. Like I said before, as the technology makes visible inroads, and mobile trends become apparent, things will evolve to meet consumers needs and wishes.
