Yes, it is possible for things to go awry. It is also possible for things to work pretty well.

Whether our control of the Philippines made us stronger or not is not terribly interesting. Our bases in Hawaii, Guam, and other islands did make us stronger as a maritime power. Not everything works out perfectly every time.

It is too murky whether there were a net gain or net loss off of most colonies, but I made the point already that there was not a lot of economic benefit, and that national prestige (and strategic concerns) had more to do with it than money. Certainly, colonies were, at best, long term investments for the imperialist powers.........
