Sure, nothing momentous is riding upon it. On the other hand, if I did not take seriously your existence as more than a character, and if I did not think I understood a few things about you, I would never have put myself through the unpleasantness of getting clobbered for bucking the crowd when you were being treated most shabbily. In that context, if I discovered that you were lying about being an alumnus, my cordial attitude would turn cold, at best, since if you were that much of a liar, I would not be able to shake the feeling of having been placed in a false position down the line. So issues like this are not purely hypothetical to me.......
