I do see your distinction. But I'm not sure I agree that it makes any difference.

What does it really matter whether Thucydides was a reliable or unrealiable historian?

There is a lot of history for which, IMO, we are better off with the myths than the realities. That's just my opinion, but I personally deplore the modern tendency to try to dig up all the possible dirt one can on historical figures to try to argue that they aren't as worthy of the admiration they receive.
