"Everything you think you remember could in fact never have happened, and you have no way to prove otherwise."

'cept for those of us who've escaped the Matrix.

It would not matter if there were a hypothetical "higher plane", I am only concerned with this existence and its characteristics. As for the memory issue, it is rather simple: even if some memory or another were false, most must be true, or I would die or be locked up for my own safety. The fact is, no one has a perfect memory; there is a tendency to efface detail over time; and everyone knows that emotion can color recollection. Nevertheless, I navigate streets successfully; call my mother and/or visit regularly; pay my bills on time; know my age and where I was born (I can confirm with a birth certificate), and so on. For practical purposes, my memory is reliable. The "scare" scenario of implanted memory is currently irrelevant, and recovered memory is dubious mainly because it occurs through hypnotic regression, and therefore is open to the charge that it is the result of suggestion. One can say that my "touchstones" are false, and I now am in a padded cell, being tricked into thinking everything is normal, but at that level, it has so little to do with anything relevant to my life as I experience it that all I can say is prove it or don't yank me........
