Demanding, aren't we? *************** Re: What other country has promoted the freedoms America has, or are you saying that our form of democracy is evil? Since the end of World War II, U.S. foreign policy has been predominantly an instrument of the corporate interests of the U.S. oligarchy. In 1953, we destabilized the democratic and popular Mossadeq regime in Iran and installed a dicatator in his place, we are still suffering the consequences, i.e. "blowback", of this ill conceived intervention. In 1954, we destroyed the democratic and popular Arbenz regime in Guatamala for the sake of the United Fruit Company. Guatemala has been a wreck since then. In the 1960's we murder 58,000 of our own citizens in a power grab against a popular and nationalistic regime in Vietnam, destabilizing Cambodia and Laos in the process. In 1975, we gave Indonesia the "green light" to attack the newly independent East Timor, resulting in the slaughter of about 1/3 of the Timorese population. In the 1980's, as you know from reading Henry Gonzales speech, we ruthlessly created Saddam Hussein's infrastructure for the creation of weapons of mass destruction and we looked the other way as he used them. If you think the U.S. is a benign force for "freedom and democracy" you are in a terribly small minority. Only Americans can be so dumb as to delude themselves about what U.S. foreign policy is really all about. It's about screwing indigenous populations for the sake of our banks and corporations. Installing right wing despots at every opportunity. And never, ever allowing true democrats to succeed. We are complete hypocrites in our rhetoric about what we are all about. Re: Who should be the Big Dog? Why does it have to be that someone has to be the alpha imperialist? I don't get it. I see no need for us to impose our will and our less than benevolent culture on the rest of the world. We do not have a charming culture. We are vulgarians. We are crass. This is not the best that the world can be. For you to suggest that we should dominate is highly inappropriate, in my opinion. I find that the culture of many other lands is preferable to the vulgarity of our strip mall mentality with its fast food erzatz cuisine. Why should we be trying to cram this crap down everyboby else's throats? Simply because we can? Apparently that's the GHP way. But it sucks. We should grow up and make an attempt at becoming a mature culture before we try to messianically spread our dysfunctionality across the entire planet. Re: I will take America with all of her faults and blindly rely on our brand of democracy over any other system any day. I see it differently. I am not willing to be blindly loyal when I can clearly see the flaws in America's arrogance, hubris and immaturity. I hope to help to perfect our culture. Not to impose an imperfect scheme on others simply because we have the power. This seems to be Bush's pre-occupation these days, sadly for all of us. -Ray
