While I agree that customers need to be rational, it might not be in SEBL's best interest to keep overselling. My impression is that one of the advantages that they have in the market is that they are seen as the gold standard, and if they oversell hard enough they could end up being thought of as no better, or even worse, than everyone else.

Great post!

I'd just add that many of the points you make are not Siebel or CRM-specific, and can be applied to most of the "silver bullet" waves over the history of software (IE, CASE, OO, ERP, etc.).

And I did LOL at this part:
all vendors (including Siebel) need to not oversell their products (chance of this happening: < 0%)
