As far as being pessimistic, keep in mind that the market has been in the process of pricing in a war, as well as the weak business environment. The war factor is a huge unknown variable that carries with it an extremely negative implication which has been adding to the market's malaise.

ASML Reiterates the Company's Outlook
Wednesday September 25, 8:05 am ET

VELDHOVEN, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2002--ASML Holding NV (ASML) today reiterated the company's guidance regarding shipments during the second half 2002.
Doug Dunn, president and chief executive officer of ASML, commented: "We reiterate our expectation that ASML will ship approximately 100 lithography systems during second half 2002, as previously disclosed. Despite obvious declines in the semiconductor equipment market, ASML still has a number of customers that are buying leading edge technology systems in preparation for an upturn in advanced chip demand."

"With orders being cancelled or changed, and customers requesting deliveries earlier or later, the semiconductor equipment market is showing increased volatility," said Doug Dunn. "Our customers and their customers are coping with uncertainty and sudden changes in demand for chip shipments. No one can predict the strength or timing of a recovery."

PS: last night I succeeded in installing printer sharing in my 2 PC network [with the help of people on the Computer Learning thread]. Since I'm an average guy, this means home networking is booming :) The next killer app could well be making PCs much easier to live with]

A glimmer of hope. Though, I think the opening rally gives this news more importance than it deserves. The real problem is continuing claims are still very high. But at least the bleeding is slower.

excerpt:
the number of people who continue to draw jobless benefits rose for the third straight week to 3.68 million in the Sept. 14 week, (snip)
