My desire is as a shareholder. As a consumer, I figure the price/performance ratios of processors are already so low (more bang for the buck) that improving upon it won't make one bit of a real-world difference anymore.

People, including the AMD cheerleaders, bring up scary stories of "Return of the $1000 processor" if AMD goes away, but I doubt that's going to happen in reality. What will happen, IMO, is that ASPs will stop falling and maybe even rise a small amount over the next few years. By then, perhaps the Asian manufacturers will finally get their act together and become the next source of competition for Intel.
