My point in raising reference to Truman vis-a-vis the KKK is that it's important to view a person's life work, and not just a snippet, in order to obtain the true picture.

Truman had a dalliance with the Klan as a young man. Truman also integrated the military in the late '40s (race and gender).

So which act represents the true Truman?

Those right-wing bashers on this board who take aim at Sen. Robert Byrd and his brief fling with the KKK must remind themselves that people change. I can assure you that Sen. Strom Thurmond, Democrat-Republican-Dixiecrat of South Carolina, has far more baggage than Robert Byrd.
