The murky waters are in the area of "international law" which I put in quotes because it is not so much a body of law as it is a set of institutional arrangements. It takes a very long time for international law to evolve -- and it can be very useful in maintaining the kind of world that is worth living in. If we destroy international law, the law of the gun becomes the dominant dispute resolution mechanism. I don't cherish the thought of a world where wars of all kinds are commonplace.
