It was racially motivated, not religious. You could be a Roman Catholic bishop, and if one grandparent was Jewish, you could still hauled off as a Jew.......

I meant that religion was not a motivating factor in the start of WWI or WWII, unlike the Crusades, say. Hitler massacred all the Jews he could in the lands he invaded, but he did not invade them just to kill off the Jews. Edit: the threat from the radical Islamists today, however, is motivated by religion (as well as power politics).
