Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) Wednesday confirmed persistent industry reports that the Shanghai foundry will be affiliated with a new 200mm wafer fab planned in Beijing.

A spokeswoman said SMIC will have management and operational responsibility for the new Beijing fab, but the project will be an independent entity. The new foundry is slated to have a capacity of 30K wafer starts a month.

She said investors are now being lined up for the new facility. Some sources had indicated SMIC might join with Huaxia Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., a projected semiconductor venture of the Shougang Group, Beijing. However, thespokeswoman said there was no connection between SMIC and Huaxia in the new Beijing fab being established.

Separately, SMIC has set up a new subsidiary in Japan to solicit increased foundry business from that country. At present Toshiba Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. are the major Japanese customers for SMIC, but the China chipmaker said it wants to add new accounts. Toshiba holds a minority equity share in SMIC and provided much of the initial semiconductor manufacturing technology.
