That's the box:

there will be further terrorist attacks against us as long as
this war continues. They may be made by al Qaeda itself, or they may be made by other groups who will spring up.
We can't totally prevent that until we've removed the true cause of those attacks: Arab cultural failure.

Other areas of the world have cultural failure, but don't attack the US.

If the exit strategy is fixing Arab "cultural failure", this goes beyond nation building into a worldwide welfare state paid for by the US.

Neither possible, nor desirable.

The cause isn't jealousy as is proposed by the hawks, even tho' jealousy exists.
The cause for suicide attacks is military aggression and support for one side or another in blood feuds that have gone on for centuries.

There is no reason to be involved in these blood feuds since we clearly cannot solve their problems for them, and in fact create fatal problems for our own citizens.

As much fun as it is to run around the world declaring we have the answers and the power, the facts are that this will be an expensive and bloody exercise resulting in instability and never-ending combat worldwide until the last suicide bomber has been killed. Its unlikely even if the US decided to change its historical purpose, that we could "change the culture" of the world through military means. The US culture is more effective, and more powerful than the military. IMO, the best the military can do is kill unlimited numbers of people, and create unlimited "blowback" attacks here at home. These folks are "undeterrable" as long as we give them reason to be.

Hi Tom, Thanks for pointing me toward Darren's post. There's been so much noise here lately I haven't been able to keep up with the thread.

Outstanding post Darren, hits the nail right on the head!

Also, a belated congratulations is in order for nailing the 300K post! That's one for the record books. I doubt there's another subject thread in cyberspace with 300K posts on it.

Best, Mike
