Yes, your cost basis is one of the two key variables necessary to compute a profit or a loss.

But cost basis should not be a factor when deciding where to sell a stock. As I said before, the one caveat to that statement is that when a sale is tax driven, obviously cost basis does come into play somewhat. But the worst mistake that retail investors make time and time again is holding onto a stock "until I get back to break even" or something like "I'm so far underwater there's no reason to sell".
