I have seen estimates by Pipes and Lewis that 10% of the Muslim world strongly sympathizes with Islamism, and that's probably higher wherever Saudi influence is strong. So, if only 1% of the sympathizers are ready to act on their beliefs, that 300,000 ready candidates for jihad. Which is not that far from the ballpark of 70,000 trainees passing through Al Qaeda camps in Aghanistan, especially considering that they must have done a certain amoung of "technology transfer" to willing souls back home.
