Belgian startup supplies Kodak with 14-megapixel CMOS sensor

Mechelen, Belgium -- FillFactory NV, a spin-off from the nearby IMEC research group, has shipping a custom 13.85 million pixel CMOS image sensor to the Professional Products division of Eastman Kodak Company. The sensor has an 8-micron pixel size and a light sensitive area of 36 mm x 24 mm. FillFactory claims this makes the component the highest resolution full-frame 35-mm format sensor available.

The sensor is being used within the DCS Pro 14n, a digital single lens reflex (SLR) professional camera launched at the Photokina 2002 exhibition held in Cologne, Germany this week (beginning September 23, 2002).

This device is an exclusive development for Kodak and will therefore not be offered as a standard FillFactory product. However, FillFactory can develop similar imaging devices for others, the company said.

"With this order from Kodak Professional, FillFactory will continue to strengthen and expand its position in the high-end digital photography market segment. Our customers in other market segments will also benefit from the investments in infrastructure and quality that have been driven by the production of the Kodak device," said Luc De Mey, FillFactory's president and chief executive officer, in a statement.

The Si wafers from which this device is assembled are produced at Tower Semiconductor Ltd. in Israel on a 0.5-micron CMOS process technology. To complement the "front-end" production FillFactory has installed a clean-room for device inspection, device testing and packaging under class 100 conditions and will continue to expand its design, production and test facilities at its Mechelen base.

FillFactory became operational in 2000 as a spin-off company of the Interuniversitary Micro Electronics Center (IMEC) as a vehicle to exploit CMOS imaging technologies developed at IMEC.
