Scott, great well thought out treatise. I agree with your sentiment analysis. But, I don't agree with the whole thing.

FWIW, I have had been long for a long time, dating back to when I first posted on this board. Right now it is a very small position, waiting on some upward movement.

My thesis is simply that short eventually have to buy to cover and therefore they are potential buyers. If you note the volume spikes in the chart you see they correspond to the price drops. This is even more apparent on a weekly chart. The shorts clearly sold when they had profits to take.

When we start to see volume spikes on up days we will know that something good is going to happen to the price. In the meantime I think it will continue languishing in the trading range until something changes the trend. I am a great believer in following the trend. It is too hard to swim upstream.
