Here's the calculation.

Assuming you want to print a 4x6 picture of the current consumer ($300) ink-jet color photo printers on premium paper (20 cents/sheet), which have a 1200 dots/inch resolution.

1200 x 1200 dots = 1.4 M-pixels / sq inch. Apply 10x compression for MPEG, that's 0.14 M-Pix/sq inch.

Multiply by 24 sq inches for 4x6 photo size, and you get approx 3.4 M-Pix.

However, the 1200 dots/inch resolution of inkjet printers is approx 1/3 or the resolution of photographic paper. And now 2400 dots/inch printers are available. That calls for a 4x increase in pixels.

So quite likely, the pixels of high quality cameras will creep toward 13 M-Pix, which is the announcement that started this discussion.
