From your mouth to Gods ears. It will be tough for israel to project its power there. More likly that US/GB/France/Russia could somehow engineer a deal in which saddam was eliminated. Russia in particular has a big stake economically both in Iraq as a viable country and its(russias) relationship with USA. And they may be the ones with the contacts incountry who could do this. Cary,
I may have semi-flip flopped on Iraq. Don't know if its my natural cowardice and/or pacificsm kicking in or my natural skepticism(Gulf of Tonkin). It seems to me now we should go thru the UN game as fast as we can. Let the world see that saddam wont allow inspections so more countries can sign on.
France, Russia and China are a superpower of sorts when they are united. Perhaps follow their lead and see where it goes. They may be wrong in their assessment but not stupid as relates to the use of WMD in the world. Teddy Kennedy's speech(unlike algore) made much sense. He will be a supporter of bush action when all else fails.
The Compromise with allies should be that we defer to them in the short term but must be able to use military force(when saddam renegs) before "a next summer in the desert scenario" comes into play. In this scenario and with France, Russia and China onboard other nations will sign on as well--perhaps even some arab states. Once in motion our allies have to promised not to be beguiled by another saddam head fake. This is by first stab at trying to express a middle position so my arguments may not be as cogent as they should be. Mike

PS No change on relocation unless totally voluntary and that is not in the cards. The "fence" is being built. Other means need to be found to separate the peoples physically. The other side of the coin is that the death and injuries caused by israel retaliation has to have the average palestinain rethinking terror. And hopefully israel can kill enough of the bad guys to erode the terror leadership. I do believe, depending on how iraq plays out, that hezbolla vs israel could be next. I am comfortable with sharon in power now. I am looking for a next gen leadership on both sides that will lead to a better future. Thats a ways off though.
