My own guess is that Pipes and crew think that public opinion has turned a corner in their direction so it gives them an opportunity to destroy the careers and lives of folk they've intellectually opposed for some time.

The divestiture campaign makes reprehensible arguments unsupported by the facts. For example, they accuse Summers of supporting war crimes, actually accuse him of complicity. That's just a smear job. It's an attempt to destroy Summers because he doesn't agree with their policy.
