This is the world's first handset for WCDMA and GSM networks. WCDMA, or wideband code division multiple access, is a technology for wideband digital radio communications of Internet, multimedia, video and other capacity- demanding applications. GSM, or global system for mobile communication, was originally developed as a pan-European standard for digital mobile telephony but has become the world's most widely used mobile system. Nokia expects that, after a testing period in the fourth quarter, commercial implementations will begin in 2003. Nokia, together with Finnish telecoms operator Sonera Corp. (SNRA), held a live demonstration of the Nokia 6650 in a live WCDMA network environment. The services introduced blended picture messaging, video clips, games and e- mail and the two companies said these services can be delivered seamlessly using both GSM/GPRS and WCDMA evolution phases of current mobile communications technologies. GPRS, or general packet radio service, is a packet-switched technology that enables high-speed wireless Internet and other data communications. The development of next-generation mobile terminals such as the Nokia 6650, combined with attractive service development, will further accelerate the take- off of new advanced 3G mobile services, the companies said. Openness and interoperability will meanwhile result in the seamless use of services across networks and borders, enhancing user experience and volume usage. Senior representatives of Nokia and Sonera speaking at Kiasma outlined how they see 3G services developing in the coming months. "The transition of services between 2G and 3G ecosystems will be an evolutionary one, with the ultimate goal of total transparency between different technologies to bring a seamless user experience," said Harri Koponen, CEO of Sonera. "The successful introduction and adoption of these new mobile services combining both visualization and user-friendliness are based on honoring true customer need and, thus, are suitable for everyday life." "Today's event marks the beginning of a period of accelerated network optimization and interoperability testing, leading to a seamless experience for mobile users," said Dr. JT Bergqvist, the head of Nokia Networks. This "incubation' period will also give application developers the perfect opportunity to work with commercial systems and terminals to create and fine- tune commercial services with broad appeal," he added. << - Eric -
