A.G.'s Office Investigates Price Gouging
26 Sep 2002
Jackson, MS

Residents fleeing Isidore are running into higher gas and hotel prices. The Attorney General's office is investigating several cases of gas and hotel price gouging.

Special assistant Attorney General Scott Johnson says no confirmed cases of price gouging have been found in the Jackson metro area. Investigators are however, questioning gas retailers along the coast and other areas who have raised their prices as much as 14 cents.

The A.G.'s office is also investigating numerous complaints of north Mississippi hotels and motels raising their rates.

Johnson says, "You have people fleeing the coast. It's not only purchasing gasoline to get away from the coast, they've got to lodge somewhere when they get away from the coast. So we're as much concerned about lodging cost so we're also investigating the cost of hotels."

Tuesday morning Governor Ronnie Musgrove declared a State of Emergency prohibiting merchants from charging more for goods and services.
