Once alewives got into Lake Michigan they exploded until they were 97% of the biomass. After winter die offs Chicago would use loaders and dump trucks to clean the beaches of the dead alewives. The about 1970 someone got the idea to stock some salmon and see what would happen.

What happened was the salmon spent 4 years eating alewives and returned to where they were stocked all grown up. It was like they had been force fed. 25 pounders were common.

Now they stock millions of salmon and trout in Superior, Michigan and Ontario.
