Tim, what we should not have done is become allies.......diplomacy thru expediency has a tendency to kick us in the butt over and over and over again!

We were never allies with Saddam. Having a relatively low level of cooperation for a limited time does not in my opinion make you someone's ally. As for it biting us in the ass, I don't think it made any difference unless Iran would have crushed Iraq without the small amount of American involvment and if that was true the situation in the area might be just as bad or worse.

In WWII we were allies with the USSR but it would have made no sense for us to have not cooperated with someone who is at war with the same people we were at war with.

When you play god and you are not one, you get into trouble very quickly.

Selling some weapons to one side (or actually both sides if you count the sales connected to Iran/Contra) means we are playing God??

This kind of behavior rarely works on a personal level, and typically is the fodder for soap operas so why should it work in the arena of nations.

It often works on a personal level. If someone is reaching for a gun and you shoot them first then they are less likely to shoot you.
