Tim,

The e-mail makes good points, but the question to ask is how different things would have been, given the current circumstances if Gore was president. We could be in even deeper recession, since there would have been no tax cut, Farm Bill would not have been stopped, airline subsidies would still be in place (Ted and Jim Cramer were just yesterday complaining that the subsidies are not high enough, and calling for bailout of telecomunication companies).

On top of that, we would get indecisive reaction to 9/11 - there was no response to Bin Laden's provocations throughout Clinton administration, why expect anything from Clinton 3 administration?

One thing I definitely agree on with Ted is that the Treasury secretary is weak, he has not shown any leadership, and Bush should seriously think about replacing him.

Joe

You didn't ask me but you're getting it anyway...

Government discretionary spending is now growing at 9% per year, in a non-inflationary environment, with 70% of this increase occurring outside of the defense budget. Farm subsidies have doubled, with a new bill calling for $190 billion in outlays.

This is far and away the worst mistake Bush has made since he took office. This massive giveaway should never have happened. Clearly, Bush thought by letting this pork barrel sail through he would win the support of the Democrats. WRONG! I hope he learned -- you just can't trust 'em.

Mismanaged airlines pay their executives millions and still get public subsidies.

Nothing to do with Bush.

Uncompetitive steel producers receive tariff protection.

I think he truly felt this was necessary.

Defense contractors get, well, whatever they want.

No specifics. Defense spending has more to do with House & Senate Pork than it does anything else. Bush even fought hard to cancel projects in Oklahoma, home of some of his most ardent supporters. Why? Because they were the wrong projects.

It is really tough to conclude that Gore would have done better on these issues. But I can't imagine where we'd be today had we had Gore in office when our spy plane was downed in China -- LET ALONE on 9/11.

This is more "It's the economy, stupid". And the fact is that today, it needs to be about terrorism. The economy will take care of itself.
