It is still a good deal since the options are worth approximately zero.

You raise an interest [and correct] point. I had not considered the true value of the options. Maybe they are worth $3 each.

Notwithstanding that the price may be right, I do not see a reason for the company to repurchase the options. Maybe take an option on 100 shares with a strike of $30 and give 50 options with a strike of $15. Equal value. But not cash out the employees.
