What do I think public education IS???

Harrumph.

With about 3,000 school districts run by independent school boards, that's hard to answer, but in general I think most schools see their role as preparing students to fit seamlessly and uncontroversially into the economic machine. In Washington, I do know that most of the school initiatives come from the business community, which wants workers who need less on the job remedial education in writing, measuring, figuring, and such skills.

The other role of the schools is to prepare students to enter the college and university market so they can be trained for higher paying jobs which require more credentialization.
