"I have seen the student will "understand" in objectives.

I taught teacher training classes at more than one University and this word always got a red mark. This was not just my thing. Everyone at that time (long time ago) was in agreement on objectives. It is possible that you have seen it (california right?) but my guess is that it slipped passed the gaurd. I doubt that things have changed that much. It is an easy thing to check on line. I bet I can find five sites that have educational objectives that don't use this word before you can find one that does.

Note: I already clarified that a teacher checking for understanding is different. Usually this is in reference to levels and evidence of engagement in the lesson rather than as specific learning objectives.

Ok, To my surprise, I saw the word "Understand" used in teaching objectives. I don't believe you would find approval for it in a Philosophy of Ed, Basic Concepts of Education, or Methods of Instruction course.
