Bonehead question-
Is there a rough estimate of number of chips required for a handheld device (3G phone from PCS- they are selling those now, or Palm enabled phone)... vs a PC? Half maybe?

I was particularly struck by Fitzgerald's statement that "The biggest gains are often made in hours or days."

This never was true. All one has to do to see that is to look at long term charts of the major semiconductor or semiconductor equipment makers. The biggest gains are made over months and years, not hours or days. The author seems to think that it will BECOME true, based on, as you pointed out, unsupported speculation.

How long ago was it that someone opined that the patent office might as well be closed, because everything that was going to be invented had been invented? That was in the late 1800s, IIRC.

And then there was "No one will ever need more than 640k of RAM."
