There is almost no such thing as a PC that's economic to repair - and these are the not-optional purchases I was referring to. Companies that maintain standard configurations have to replace the whole installed base once a certain percentage of their machines are having problems.

keep in mind that Microsoft doesn't make anything close to $250 per PC in a typical corporate installation with large licensing deals rather than one-at-a-time purchases.

The typical corporate desktop uses XP pro (which can't be open licensed) Office pro, and cals for W2k server and Exchange. Many will also need cals for Sql Server.

OEM cost on XP Pro alone is close to $150 - Dell probably gets it for about $100. OEM Office XP Pro is $275 and Dell probably gets it for about $150. The cals are cheap if your volume is high enough, $35 or so for both.

Keep in mind that Microsoft's marginal cost on each additional unit sold with Windows, Office, and CALs is something like $10.
