Agreed. And the failure to use the velvet glove is a failing I can't understand. There was absolutely no need for Bush to make a major doctrinal policy speech baring the titanium fist.

Fortunately there are enough gray-hairs around him to contain the more aggressive impulses. And in truth, the actions are a lot more restrained than the words. So far.

Remember Bush doesn't just have to lay out a continuing American policy, he has to correct Clinton's lapses. After such a long period of US passivity and inaction, a certain amount of 'Crazier Than Thou' may have a salutary effect, and may even be necessary to get the final policy to include real action, not just slightly more active-sounding diplomacy.
