Civilization depends upon a material surplus, or else one is stuck in the grubbing for subsistence. But unless the surplus is huge, most people will not have the means or leisure to participate in a civilized life. Therefore, productivity is a key issue. There is no infinite regression. Mankind seeks freedom from drudgery, health, the accumulation of knowledge, a modicum of amenities (such as comfortable lodgings and attractive clothing), an array of amusements, a reasonable degree of security in property and person, and so on. Whatever society is better at affording these things to the mass of mankind is better, whatever its flaws. Value systems may be compromises. Certainly, they are fraught with qualifications. I would prefer to say that they are an effort to achieve balance and define limits among competing goods. If you wish the bulk of mankind to live in misery, with non- potable water, malnutrition, lack of schooling, lack of opportunity even if educated, short lifespans, disease ridden, dirty, living in hovels without running water or basic sanitation, living in constant discomfort, etc., then support the "back to nature" crowd. For myself, I favor modernization.......
