Whatever he has to say on the subject, it has been an interesting topic. When people say "I owe you an explanation" - what they mean is, "I think I've done something wrong, and I don't want you to punish me in some way, and I am trying to mitigate the situation for my benefit by giving you this explanation"- frequently the explanations following "I owe you and explanation" are not true. I think rather than using the word owing, what we have are expectations, justified or not, based on custom. This has nothing to do with morality, and everything to do with self interest and greasing the social skids. At any rate, that is the way I see it.
