I suspect that if you need them for your professional development, and find yourself unavoidably late, you would do what you could to be sure they didn't feel you were an inconsiderate sort of person or one who was careless of their time.

That would suggest, probably, an explanation and an apology.

If administrators expected teachers to apologize and explain every time they slunk in late to a faculty or committe meeting, or if teachers expected administrators to apologize every time they were a few minutes late for a scheduled observation or parent meeting, the volume of hot air would go up dramatically in the vicinity of schools.
