duty versus courtesy


Yes, that IS the crux of the discussion.

Some people are getting off on whether it's considerate or kind or warm and fuzzy to apologize and explain. I think most of us like, even if we don't necessarily expect, a person who is late to be apologetic. It makes us feel better, even sometimes feel superior for not being the person that is late. The apology may in some cases be viewed very much in the same light as a subservient dog groveling before the alpha dog. Which I assume is gratifying to the alpha dog.

But that's not the point at issue.

The point at issue is whether there is a DUTY to apologize and explain. And if so, from whence that duty arises, since all duty must arise out of some basic principle of behavior.
