damn, you sound like one of the libertopians.... Think about all of the people who would be put out of work if we went with a flat tax....accountants, tax attorneys, IRS agents. We just can't have efficiency put into the system, it puts people out of work. And while we are at it, we should get rid of the stinking computers, they make things more efficient too.

SS is the most unsettling example of this. and why (my opinion) i believe that legislators have allowed the funding problems to persist. the funding problems have resulted from expansion of benefits (pandering for votes) at the expense of weaker (less-voting) constituencies. as long as the "recipient" constituency has the majority and the politician is unwilling to legislate what is in the best interest of the country as a whole, we will continue to see irresponsible fiscal behavior. i do think that as times become leaner, the balkanization will become more pronounced. ( btw....re: capital gains/flat tax.....lp for president!) :)
