The Sydney Morning Herald is Australia’s most prestigious newspaper. And since Australia does not have major power ambitions, I find that the Australian view of the world is not colored with self-interest.

OK. Thanks. May I encourage you, when you use Australian sources, to annotate them for us very provincial Americans.

You have posted some fascinating stuff here, JO, but I think I read it much differently that you do.

stated that "patriotism run amok" has put the integrity of the journalism profession at risk.

That means, that since 911, Rather can't get away with "bad mouthing" this country the way he used to.

?As we get good reports from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, we must redouble our efforts to make sure we do not seem to be simply reporting from their vantage or perspective.

That means, The CNN chief wants his reporters to cut down on the "Pack Journalism" that they practice with the European Press, and quit assuming that America is the "Bad Guy" when they report.

How about nearly a billion reasons the Australians might have for not rocking the boat in Iraq:

The bitterness over Australia's preparedness to join a US war on Baghdad now seems to have destroyed any hope of getting Australia's wheat trade, worth $890 million a year, back to the secure footing of a favoured trading-partner relationship.
