I spent 16 years in EDA. The core software business is relatively low growth, has been for several years. As a compensation, it's a steady business and the boom/bust cycles are less vicious than semi equip and semis.

Most of the growth in the 1996-2000 period came from building up design services business, aka body shops. As you would expect, this business has cratered since the bubble burst.

The anaemic growth prospects make them OK defensive stocks by tech standards (especially SNPS), but they're totally not the right choice to ride any rebound upwards.
