Whenever Gao is presented with facts that he doesn't like he either ignores the statement or selectively forgets it, or runs and hides under the bed for the night.

This is a characteristic symptom of people suffering from psychosis. A lost sense of reality, and the inability to have any meaningful dialogue. It's not his fault, and in all likelihood it's treatable with pschotropic drugs. The challenge is getting these people treated. They don't know their psychotic.

The pattern is typically, they get their initial treatment after some concerned family member legally forces it, or they commit some act of violence. They get treatment, sic meds; think they're well; stop taking the meds; go psychotic again.
