Nah, Derek, you just don't get it. It's only immoral when the U.S. bases its foreign policy on its oil interests (or so they claim). I have yet to see a single protest over France or Russia's basing their foreign policies on their oil interests. The complainers are basically not interested in the conduct of other countries, as far as I can tell.

When the new resolution comes up for a vote in the Security Council, I expect Russia to abstain. A veto at this time would not be useful to them.

They may be angling for more latitude in Georgia. We seem to have given them more latitude in Chechenya, as we gave the Chinese more latitude in Xinjiang.

My impression is that Russia's real ties in the region are not with Iraq but with Iran, although obviously Russia needs all the money it can get.

So the recent publicity about West African oil may be calculated to get their attention.
