I agree that the major airlines are clueless. They don't seem to have figured out, most of them, that they can't just rely on routes; they have to find a niche. I wouldn't really want to fly on SW, but at least I know what they are and how they compare. Same with Alaska, and BTW your point about short flights is a good one: Alaska needs to provide better service because most of their routes are longer (up and down the west coast, up to Alaska itself and down to Mexico, and a number of long cross-country routes). The longer the flight, the more critical good service becomes.

I guess my point is that if airlines can't make a profit at current rates, they need to find a way to distinguish themselves so people are willing to pay more to fly on them.
