Dear Ken: Well one thing you may be missing is the difference between DEFINED BENEFIT PLANS (where ultimate benefit is guaranteed) and DEFINED CONTRIBUTION PLANS (where only the contribution is guaranteed the benefits are whatever they are). For years companies have been switching to the latter, I have no idea what proportion of defined benefit plans still exist. jdn

09:13 ET UBS trims ests for SBC, Verizon, BellSouth UBS Warburg trims 2003 ests and price targets for SBC, VZ, and BLS, saying that their analysis of pension and post-retirement benefit accounting at the Bell pure-plays suggests pressure on earnings will increase in 2003-04; cuts SBC price target to $24 from $30, VZ to $32 from $34, and BLS to $22 from $26.
