Chicago PMI tumbles

Regional manufacturing index shows surprisingly big drop for September.
September 30, 2002: 10:18 AM EDT

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Manufacturing in the U.S. Midwest contracted in September for the first time since February, according to data released Monday.

The National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago index fell to 48.1 from 54.9 in August. A reading below 50 points to a contracting regional manufacturing economy. A reading above 50 signals expansion.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the September index at 53.1. The index began to show signs of improvement early this year, with February marking the first time in 18 months the index was above 50.

The employment component of the index rose to 46.6 from 44.6 in August, after reaching 48.1 in July and 48.9 in June. Prices paid slipped to 57.6 from 63.6 last month.

Recent data on the U.S. economy have been mixed. Last week, a report showed durable goods declined by less than expected in August. Sales of new homes increased, while existing new homes sales decreased. In addition, consumer sentiment data posted declines.
