Mike,
The real prize for saddam is nukes. He wants to be seen as a world power. Chemical and bio weapons are seen by him as only temporary solutions. Everyone agrees that in 5 years at the outside he will have deliverable nukes as well as better chem/bio delivery systems, if needed. The best case worst case scenario is that he leverages this acquisition of these weapons to control the middle east. He will never believe that US will go to nuclear war over arabs. QED no deterrence. Why is this so shocking to people? Israel and FRance didnt think US would automatically go to nuke war over them either.
So the alternative to action probably is in reality Saddam running the Arab show in the mideast. Now you get proliferation as Iran goes nuclear to defend itself from Iraqi control. The stakes are large and the issues complex. mike

U.S. Treasury yield plunge points to Fed rate cut

biz.yahoo.com

"I think the Fed could ease this week," said Ram Bhagavatula, chief economist at Royal Bank of Scotland Financial Markets. "It doesn't matter that many at the Fed don't want to cut, they're going to have to."

Bill Gross, who manages more than $250 billion in fixed-income assets at the world's largest bond fund, PIMCO, said the Fed would likely cut rates by half a percentage point by the November central bank meeting, if not before.
